This hearty beef stew recipe is one my Mom has been making for years and it's actually a recipe of her Grandmother's. So 4 generations of cooking love in this one.

It's a wonderful family meal. So gather around the dinner table and enjoy!

Hearty Beef Stew

Ingredients

  • 2-3 lbs stew meat, cut into 2" chunks
  • 6-8 carrots cut into 1" slices or chunks
  • 4 stalks celery cut into 1" thick slices
  • 1 medium onion, diced into chunks
  • 2 turnips, cut into 1-2" chunks
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 28 oz can of tomatoes (whole cut in half)
  • 1 cup Sherry wine (or red wine if you don't have sherry)
  • 1 Tbsp + Sauce Goddess Super Chunk Steakhouse seasoning

  • 2 Bay leaves
  • 1 Tbsp corn starch (or gluten free flour)
  • Olive oil for cooking
  • Optional-
  • 1 one rosemary sprig
  • 1 thyme sprig
  • 2 red potatoes cut into chunks the same size as the turnips

Directions

  1. Preheat over to 250°.

  2. Season the meat with Super Chunk Steakhouse spices.
  3. Heat oil in the roasting pan.
  4. Brown meat lightly.
  5. Add wine and bay leaves.
  6. Place pan in the oven and bake for 2 hours.
  7. Toss the celery, onion, turnips and carrots in corn starch. Set aside.
  8. After 2 hours, add veggies (but NOT the peas) and optional herbs.
  9. Stir to combine and return the pan to the oven for 1 hour.
  10. After 1 hour, remove the pan from the oven.
  11. Check the meat (we're looking for fork-tender-see note) and veggies to see if they are done or close to done.
  12. If the meat is fork-tender, it is time to add the peas and check the seasoning. If the meat is not fork-tender, return the pan to the oven for another 30-45 minutes.
  13. There should now be a sauce in the pan along with the meat and veggies. Checking the seasoning is as simple as taking a small sample of the sauce and checking to see if it tastes good. Does it need salt, pepper? If so, add more Steakhouse seasoning.
  14. Repeat fork-tender test until the meat and veggies are cooked completely.
  15. Add the peas.
  16. Return the pan to the oven for a final 30 minutes.
  17. Remove the Bay leaves and the herbs.
  18. Serve hot!
